FirstMed Health Report: 'Vaccines Against Tick-Borne Encephalitis'
By Dr. Sue McGladdery: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an infection of the central nervous system, which can have serious long-term effects and in some cases, be fatal. TBE is transmitted to humans by ticks and is endemic to many parts of Europe and Asia. There is no treatment for TBE; however, it is preventable through prophylactic vaccination. There are 2 comparable vaccines available in Hungary - Encepur and FSME.

The Conventional Immunization Schedule consists of three doses of the vaccine followed by a booster vaccination approximately 3 years after the last dose and every 3 years thereafter.

Protection levels of around 97% are rapidly reached after the 2nd dose of vaccine (given at 1-3 months using this schedule).

However, 100% protection for future exposure can only be assured by completing the 3rd dose as per the schedule. Otherwise, it’s necessary to repeat the entire 3 dose schedule prior to the next trip/exposure.

1st Dose At least 1-3 months prior to travel/exposure
2nd Dose 1 to 3 months after the first vaccination
3rd Dose 9 to 12 months after the second vaccination
Booster Vaccination 3 years after the last vaccination

If more rapid onset of protection is needed, the Rapid Immunization Schedule should be followed.

The rapid immunization schedule also consists of three doses (plus boosters) with the difference being that the first and second dose are given two weeks apart, in order to ensure rapid protection. Protection levels as high as 92% are reached rapidly after the 2nd dose following the rapid immunization schedule. However, 100% protection for long term can only be assured by completing the 3rd dose as per the schedule, otherwise, it’s necessary to repeat the 3 dose schedule prior to the next trip/exposure.

1st Dose At least 2-3 weeks prior to travel/exposure
2nd Dose 2 weeks after the first vaccination
3rd Dose 9 to 12 months after the second vaccination
Booster Vaccination 3 years after the last vaccination

Vaccination has been very in preventing cases of TBE and both vaccines have a high safety profile. FSME-IMMUN is manufactured using chicken eggs. Therefore, those with allergies or who have sensitivity to chicken eggs should consult their physician before proceeding with vaccination. Encepur uses an inactivated European TBE virus strain: K23. Both Encepur Adults and Encepur Children are free from preservatives, protein-derived stabilizers, and human serum albumin (HSA).
