New Beer Gardens In Budapest By Treehugger Dan
With the hot weather finally here, I have been making the rounds of the new beer gardens. I tried Otkert (Zrinyi u. 4, 5th district) a few weeks ago at about 5pm. The place is done up nice, and conveniently located without being overpriced for its location. However, it was deserted except for one other person at the bar and after waiting 10 minutes at the bar we still could not even get the blond bartender's attention.

We left. I went back again last night, the place was swinging, and the new bartender was friendly and served us immediately. If they did away with the overly loud crap techno music and the weird 1970's Playboy centerfold wallpaper in the men's toilet, it might become a nice place to hang out.

During the World Cup, we checked out what used to be my absolute favorite beer garden - Sark Kert on Margit Island (just behind Hold Udvar). It used to be run by the folks at Siraly. It was down to earth, dog and child friendly, reasonably priced, and very mellow. Unfortunately, it has been taken over at least for this summer, by Champs sports bar.

The place is very nicely done up, lots of beanbag chairs  under cover, and a huge improvement on Sark Kert are the renovated toilets. However, in order to get back their investment as quickly as possible, they have taken the usual Hungarian route and short-staffed so much that service is virtually non-existent. It has a completely different vibe than Sark Kert, and not one I feel comfortable with. Still, it is convenient and comfortable, and very close to the BKV water taxi stop.

I visited the Grund this week, apparently run by the folks at West Balkan. This corporate "kert" seems sponsored by Blikk. But it was more bleak than Blikk. There was no concept, no dekor, and no customers on a late Sunday afternoon. Service was friendly though. maybe it picks up at night?

I caught quite a few of the World Cup matches at Szilvuple Kert (associated with the salsa club Szilvuple around the corner) on O utca a couple doors down from Most Kert. The frescoes are pretty cool, and there is an extensive under-utilised upstairs section much like at Mumus. Service is very friendly, and they are very proud of their hazi kolbasz. Since a
couple of us are vegetarians, and their menu consists only of hazi kolbasz, they had no problem with us bringing in a pizza from the Carwash next door. There is also a big room inside to the left for bicycle parking.

Most Kert on O utca is a converted parking lot behind the Most Restaurant, previously Articsoka on Zichy Jeno utca. Child-friendly, dog-friendly, a good menu (particularly the onion rings), and conveniently located just off the Hajos u. walking street. Service is occasional, but when you get it, it is very friendly. There is also a rooftop terrace that I have not been up to yet.

The beer garden of the year is another one I was just at this weekend. The Grandio http://www.grandiopartyhostel.com/ at Nagy Diofa utca 8 in the 7th District. Connected with the Grandio Hostel that surrounds the courtyard with long balconies, one is left to wonder which came first the huge prehistoric plants screening off the tables, or the building renovation.
The chicken burger I had was good (though the chips were thin and the salad skimpy), and service friendly. With all the green, bring some bug dope."
