Xpat Opinion: Teachers Not At Fault For Education Mess In Hungary
If it is not broken, then don’t fix it goes the English phrase. However if it is broken and is not being fixed, what is one to do? Scream, jump up and down, pull one’s hair out, what? The education system is broken here in Hungary. I have been in 22 classrooms over a little more than 30 days and the disparity between some students is enormous. I do not blame the teachers. I do not blame the schools.

I do not even blame the ministry of education. I do blame fairly and squarely the politicians. Tinkering with the system, cutting budgets does have huge consequences in the classroom.

Teachers are bound by the rules imposed upon them from higher up. This goes on until we reach the top. Where does the buck stop? Harry. S. Truman told us that the buck stopped with him. He was ultimately responsible. But it seems that here in Hungary nobody wants to be responsible.

I have students who are at such different levels in many classes, it makes teaching nigh on impossible. How this can be tolerated, by anyone I do not understand. Students should be graded yearly and placed in the correct class, not according to there form year, but to their academic ability.

This would far better reflect their ability and not create false impressions for the students. It is their lives, their futures, which are being played with. This is not right. It is time the politicians stepped up to the plate and took responsibility for this mess. I hope and pray they will do so as soon as possible, or I am living in cloud cuckoo land?
