BAT Starts Cigarette Price War In Hungary
"British-American Tobacco Magyarország (BAT) is lowering prices of its premium cigarettes by Ft 60-80 a pack from November 2, Napi Gazdaság reports. Consumers will not notice the difference until retailers sell off existing stocks, the newspaper notes, adding that a price war could begin.

Smokers in Hungary are moving towards lower-end products, BAT observed, but the price drop may direct consumers towards more premium categories.

Market researcher Nielsen found that BAT has lost market share in Hungary to Philip Morris as consumption moved towards lower categories.

Philip Morris has a 39.8% market share in Hungary, followed by BAT at 39.3%, Imperial Tobacco at 13.1%, Japan Tobacco with 6.0% and Continental with 1.5%."
