Wikileaks Statement By U.S. Ambassador Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis In Hungary
"In recent days a number of alleged cables that the media has received through wikileaks have appeared in the press. While I can’t comment on specifics or the authenticity of these documents, I deeply regret the disclosure of any information that was meant to be confidential. I condemn wikileaks for trying to undermine our relationship with Hungary as well as our relationships with our allies and partners around the world.

The White House has already announced that every department of the U.S. Government , including the State Department is now taking additional steps to further safeguard our sensitive information.

Diplomacy is contingent upon being able to have an open and honest dialogue where views are exchanged. That is what I do with my interlocutors here in Hungary as does my embassy staff, and as do diplomats from other nations in Budapest, Washington and other capitals around the world. It is our job to understand Hungary, its people, its views, its thoughts, its beliefs, its concerns and provide that information to those people in Washington who make policy decisions. It is only through understanding and knowing each other that we can avoid misunderstandings and achieve our common objectives.

Hungary is our friend and ally. We share the same values, interests and goals. We benefit by working together to face global challenges; our security and economic well-being are tied together. The U.S. deeply values its friendship with Hungary, and I am committed to working with all Hungarians to maintain and further advance our partnership."
