Inspiration From Above III. Concert, Trafó Budapest, 8th January
"Trixie Whitley, who is best-known as the singer of Black Dub, took to the stage for the first time at three years of age, at the concert of her singer-songwriter father, Chris Whitley. Trixie was born in Belgium in 1987 and spent her childhood in New York before moving to Europe when she turned 11, where she began touring as the member of numerous dance and theater companies (Kopergieterij, Victoria, Les Ballets C de la B) a year later as a drummer / singer / actor / dancer, until she turned 15, when she decided to focus solely on music.

She worked with Meshell Ndgeocello, Marc Ribot, Robert Plant, as well as getting acquainted with the Grammy Award-winning producer, Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan, Neil Young), who invited her to sing in the newly formed band known as Black Dub.

At just 22 years old, Trixie Whitley has already proven herself true heir to her family of artists, musicians, and poets. Born in Ghent, Belgium, she moved to New York when she was just one year old, with her father, musician Chris Whitley. Even as a toddler, she was immersed in music, spending time with her father as he recorded at the world’s most renowned studios, including Electric Ladyland. At age 11, she picked up the drums.

During her early teens she toured Europe with several musical theatre companies, acting, singing, drumming, and playing bass. Also an accomplished DJ, she’s performed at the Smak Museum, the Eskimo Parties in Belgium, the Dour Festival’s Main Tent, and around the world. After spending time as a professional dancer with Les Ballets C de la B, she quit school to move to New York City at age 17. Working as a waitress in Brooklyn and Queens, she began to focus on her own songwriting.

After returning to Belgium in 2005, following the passing of her father, she continued to write and record her own material, performing at venues in Europe and the Americas, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Blue Note Festival, Pukkel Pop, the Mercury Lounge, the Knitting Factory, Handelsbeurs, De Vooruit, and the Troubador.

In 2008 Whitley returned to New York to record an EP coproduced by Meshell Ndegeocello.
She’s contributed to albums by Chocolate Genius, Chris Whitley, and Jerboa & Krewcial. She’s worked with producers Craig Street (Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson) and Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan). She’s currently lead vocalist for Daniel Lanois’ band Black Dub, with Brian Blade on drums and Daryl Johnson on bass.

"I'm a searcher," she reveals. "I'm really interested in innovation and expressionism. Throughout life, I've learned to trust my instincts. A lot of my music is driven by my gut, which obviously makes it very emotional. I'm not hiding anything; this music is who I am and my motive for creating." (Trixie Whitley)

Stian Westerhus

Stian Westerhus is the wunderkind of the new generation of young Norwegian musicians. He appeared in the band Puma playing purely improvizational music and the profession audience and the international press gave him praise at once. He is still a member of Puma, although he gives many solo concerts and workshops all across the world and is a regular guest of Ulver, Arve Henriksen’s band named Supersilent, as well as taking over from Eivind Aarset in Nils Petter Molvaer’s trio; he is also the partner of Kenneth Kapstad in Monolithic as well as putting on duo concerts with Sidsel Endresen, Helge Sten, Terje Isungset and Zach Hill (Hella).

For the last few years Stian Westerhus has put more and more energy into challenging the electric guitar alone on a stage. Having been blessed with little or no respect for the instrument his performances balance raw expressiveness, virtuosity and melodic instinct utilizing his Norwegian heritage as well as growing up listening to Slayer.

With a soundscape far beyond the standard guitar he seeks to push the boundaries for improvised music across the muddy waters of genres.

“The sense of menace is generated with huge energy by the belligerently brilliant Norwegian guitarist Westerhus who coaxes a plethora of tortured sounds from his axe, bowed notes elongating into harmonic dismemberment of epic proportions. (...) This is heady, sometimes heavy, otherworldly stuff, fuelled by jazz but never hindered by it. Welcome to the new century of improvised music.” (JazzWise Magazine, U.K.)

Stian has also played with trumpeter Arve Henriksen, Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent), Zach Hill (Hella), Lasse Marhaug, Kjetil Möster, Paal Nilssen-Love, Trondheim Soloists, Trondheim Voices and many many more, as well as receiving awards like “Young Jazz Musician Of The Year” (N), “Molde International Jazz Festival Talent Award” (N) and “BBC’s Award for Innovation in Jazz” (UK). Stian Westerhus also writes and performs music for modern dance.

Concert starts at 8 p.m."
