Invitation: Hodworks: Basse Dance, MU Theater Budapest. 19 February
"The performance leans on the music of 15th century Europe. Basse dance was the most common court dance of the century, building on down-to-the-ground, light, graceful treads. The frame of the performance is determined by the musical style and by the structure of the movements. Music of the era serves for creating harmony, passing time, entertainment and dancing; making existence feel elevated, weightless and elegant.

It’s a dance card, a strict schedule of music and movements.

The organizing principle of the choreography is unpredictability; the concourse of muscles and reflexes. Community develops from exalted soli, simultaneous movements get synced. The disintegrated elements of the movement form new shapes. The mental state resulting from physicality and its impact on the movement in return loop the choreography into infinity.

Background of Basse danse

Research and rehearsals on Basse danse started in March, 2010, and were scheduled in six stages. Each rehearsal period lasted for three to five weeks, during which time selected improvised elements were fixed and structured, thus creating focal points for each presentation. As a result of the research period (which was called Daily Routine) six core studies were created and presented out of a total of four hours of choreographic material.

Thanks to a grant of the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme, Hodworks moved to Berlin in January 2011 to continue it's daily routine of research at the Tanzfabrik-Berlin. In the four months that followed the accumulated choreographic material got crystallized into a new language of movement (which John Ashford wittily describes as 'concentrated distraction') and, on the other hand, the work took a new direction into becoming a full-evening performance. The results of the Berlin rehearsal period were presented under the working title 'CHOICE' to a professional audience on 20 May, 2011, at Radialsystem, in the studio of Sasha Waltz.
