Hungarian Tax Authority Checks Protest Organisers
"The Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) has carried out tax checks against the organisers of the protest group One Million for Press Freedom, news website Index reported on Wednesday. The group has mobilised tens of thousands in anti-government protests, starting last year.

As the group is not a legal entity, donations for the demonstrations were collected in the bank accounts of organisers Mátyás Torsa and Róbert Fölkel.

Torsa said the investigation was directed at the 2006-10 period as he did not submit a tax declaration for those years. He added that he did pay income tax during that time.

The tax officials told him that they were acting on instructions from higher up, and that it is no coincidence that he is being investigated shortly before a planned protest on March 15, Torsa told Index.

He said the tax officials asked questions about who manages his group’s video channel on YouTube, who produces the group’s videos and at what cost."
