9. Wasabi

Okay, it’s a gimmick. The conveyor belt sushi thing. Or “merry-go-round sushi,” as my kids like to call it. It’s been a good gimmick in Tokyo for decades, why not here? And having two tracks, one with hot food and the other with cold, is a good idea. While I’ve had better in Vienna, Wasabi delivers a fun experience with decent food from all over Asia, and I can’t resist that. Nor is the all-you-can-eat concept always a bad thing…

Anyway, Wasabi has three locations, in Óbuda, in MOM Park (pretty good food for a mall) and in Pest, District 6 at Podmaniczky utca 21. www.wasabi.hu. But for pure Japanese we like Sushi Sei, in Óbuda in the Új Udvar shopping mall, even though it has about as much atmosphere as a corporate cafeteria. We save Fuji for special occasions, and generally have Japanese in Vienna.

10. I could mention some other great Italian places, like Porcellino Grasso (www.porcellino.hu) and Alessio (www.cafealessio.hu), which would probably make the date-night list someone requested.

Or we could debate whether Iguana is still “in” or discuss the merits of the Vapiano concept. But instead, here’s a list of places I want to check out, some of which were submitted by readers but I couldn’t include them because I haven’t been there yet. Let me know your opinions so I can go with a truly unbiased palate…

Ring Cafe (I hear the burgers are great)
the Himalayan and Uzbek restaurants
Bronco’s Steak House, which I hear is out in the boonie burbs but good
Black Cab Burger (the other “authentic burger place”)
Nobu and Costes, needless to say. Anybody wanna pay for it?
