80,000 Applicants Admitted To Universities In Hungary
Nearly three-fourths of the total of 110,000 applicants have been admitted to universities or colleges, it was announced yesterday. In all, 79,861 students have been admitted to post-secondary institutions, 18,000 fewer than last year.

Of them, 51,000 will receive full state grants, while a further 2,000 will be offered partial grants. Nearly 27,000 students will be required to pay tuition fees.

The Socialist Party alleged that the higher education system has collapsed.

Former education minister István Hiller said that while the number of students admitted to universities is rising across Europe, the Orbán cabinet has reduced the number of state-financed places from 53,000 to 32,500 in one year.

Undersecretary Norbert Kis said Hungarian higher education remains open, attractive and generally available.
