Former BKV Head Withdraws Testimony In Hagyó Trial In Hungary
BKV trial defendant Attila Antal yesterday withdrew his testimony against former deputy mayor Miklós Hagyó and Ernő Mesterházy – a senior advisor during the term of mayor Gábor Demszky – at the ongoing BKV trial at the Kecskemét Court. Antal, a former head of the Budapest public transport company, said he had produced his incriminating testimony according to the expectations of police in order to avoid jail.

He had been “between life and death and police told him that they would only release him if he speaks up” Antal said.

He apologised to Hagyó, Mesterházy and even Demszky, who is not involved in the criminal case.

Antal pleaded guilty on just one count, involving a contract on assessing the technical condition of photocopiers.

Hagyó pleaded innocent to all charges against him, while Mesterházy last week described the proceedings as a show trial.
