Invitation: 'Esther', Dance Performance, National Dance Theatre, 30 September
My piece draws on the book of Esther. The book tells the story of how the Jewish-born Esther might have lived as a member of a people oppressed by the Persians, and later, concealing her origins, as the chosen one by the great world ruler Ahasuerus, as a queen of a foreign country.

How she saved her people from the machinations of the vengeful Haman, i.e. from certain death, and how fate turned around when malignant Haman was hanged on the tree, that he himself intended for Mordecai, Esther’s foster father. For the Jews, since this more than 2,500-year-old event, the unpredictability of fate is synonymous with joy, with liberation and the Purim, which is one of the most joyful celebrations of this religion.

In my choreography Esther, Haman, Ahasuerus and Mordecai are merely symbols of humility, love, the possession of power, vengefulness, selflessness and truth. In my interpretation Esther’s life is a psychological struggle in the strange duality of captivity and freedom, balancing between faith and love.

I have tried to embed the story in an environment where the ordinary concepts of space and time cease to exist, to make the physical manifestations of the dancers emotion based. This elaborated, personal interpretation is embraced by Esther’s story.

The performance is a co-production of Inversedance – Zoltán Fodor Company and the National Dance Theatre.
