Invitation: International Food Events In Budapest
The 'National Gastro Days' at what's also called the Great Market Hall in Budapest - located at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge - are held each week from Thursday to Saturday. Every week in 2012 sees a different country introduce its national culinary wonders, as well as cultural treats. Previous events this year have featured food from Latin-America, India, Africa, Bulgaria, and Croatia. Currently India is the country in focus, read on for the full schedule of events, and a few shopping tips.

The 'Központi Vásárcsarnok' is the largest market in Budapest, the building is over 100 years old. It's an enjoyable shopping experience, admiring the architecture while watching everyday Hungarians buy fresh produce. It's worth noting the opening hours are Thurs-Fri: 9am-6pm, Sat: 9am - 3pm.

Along with food specialities, there's a wide selection of wines and spirits. In fact you can find practically everything food and drink related here on one of the three levels. You might even like to try a lángos, the deep-fried Hungarian snack, or a véres hurka (black pudding) with fresh bread and mustard.

Local shopping tips include saffron for a reasonable prices. Pickled paprika stuffed with cabbage is an interesting buy, more conventional Hungarian specialities are of course paprika powder, salami, and Tokaji Aszú wine.
