EU Court To Try Hungarian Judges Retirement Case
The Court of the European Union will try the case of Hungarian judges’ retirement in Luxembourg on Monday, Népszava reports. The European Commission (EC) launched infringement proceedings against Hungary early this year, and later turned to the court after failing to reach agreement with the Hungarian government. The court decided in July to take up the case in a fast-track procedure.

Under Hungarian legislation in force since January 1, the retirement age for judges, prosecutors and public notaries has dropped from 70 to 62. The EC finds the 18-month transition preceding the new regulation’s entry into force too short.

It also objects to the fact that raising the average age of retirement to 65 is inconsistent with the law applying to judges. No ruling is expected on Monday, with the two parties only expounding their positions.
