Improving Retail Sales Numbers In Hungary In August 2012
In the initial eight months of 2012 sales of food, beverages and tobacco products managed to stagnate year-on-year in an unfavourable global economic environment. In August decline in the retail sub sector decreased from July’s 2.4 percent to 1.5 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Mail order and internet services providers continued to generate dynamically increasing turnover; sales at this sub sector was higher by 46.6 percent in August compared to the same period of the previous year, but turnover was also on the rise at stores of cosmetics articles (6.1 percent). Considering the initial eight months, these sub sectors including textile, clothing and footwear stores managed to increase sales.

After a decline of 2.4 percent in the previous month the volume of sales at stores of food, beverages and tobacco products, which comprise 44.8 percent of total volume, regarding the entire eight-month period turnover volume was equal to last year’s level.

Sales at non-specialized stores were down by 3.5 percent in the eighth month of the year, which corresponds to an aggregate decline of 2.2 percent for the initial eight months of the year. Sales at filling stations continue to lag behind the level in the corresponding period of the previous year. Sales declined by 3.3 percent and 2.8 percent in August and in the period of the initial eight months, respectively.

According to currently available Eurostat data, in August the volume of retail sales declined in 10 EU countries, while it increased in 12 of them. Decline averaged 1.3 percent in the euro-zone, whereas regarding the EU 27 stagnation was observed.
