Restaurant Review: Indulging In Hooters Budapest
This week a small group of guys – a couple of expats (our Hungarian wives said we could go) and a local bloke – checked-out the Hooters restaurant at Liszt Ferenc tér. We weren't quite sure what to expect, as it turned out we had a very decent time. The place was packed on Wednesday night with a mostly male crowd, mainly respectable looking chaps in their 30's and 40's, watching football on all the big screen TV's. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their drinks, food, and genuine US-style service here in Budapest. Sure the vibe was boosted by the fact that all servers are beauties in skimpy outfits - but if you’re not against lovely ladies, what's not to like about that?

Our group of three ordered an assortment of appetizers and mains, and we quickly found out the portions are easy to share due to their ‘buxom proportions’ - ok sorry, will avoid further big boob puns from here on...

A plate of Fried Shrimp arrived first, served in a ‘barbequey’ sauce, the overall sea-food taste was great, and good value at HUF 1700 for 10 pieces. Next up was a veggie-option of Cheese Quesadilla, properly made with melted real cheese - read: not trapista. What can you expect from a simple quesadilla dish? As well as being made from authentic ingredients, mainly it needs to be served-up nice and crispy rather than horribly soggy. This one was positively spot-on, terrific flaky texture, and good value at HUF 1400 complete with trimmings.

We asked for our 10 Naked Chicken Wings (it’s okay, that’s what they’re called) to be delivered on the spicy side. They were tasty if not outstandingly spicy, anyway for HUF 1500 we couldn’t complain and can always order them ‘extra hot’ next time. On the topic of their chicken and prices, one of the group noticed that 50 Hooters wings are priced below HUF 7000, in KFC the price is around HUF 9000, so kudos to Hooters for a great deal.

For the main course we began by choosing from the ‘local favourites’ section of the menu, ordering Fish and Chips at HUF 2800. Made with a tempura batter this was a huge hit, 90% fish and 10% batter instead of the other way around at other places in town. The batter was light and the fish was tender, a real winner and good value given the enormous plate-full.

Our smiley server suggested we try a Western Burger, and we gave her tip a go to see what we would get for HUF 2540. It looked amazing, just as juicy as our Hooters girl, said one of the lads who couldn’t resist the well-meaning but obvious gag. Anyway, the thick and mighty beef patty was topped with a large crispy onion ring and loads of bacon and BBQ sauce, served in one of the freshest buns around. Our team has tasted quite a few burgers in Budapest, and this one rates as one of the best, far better than anything at TGI’s for example, it’s also great value in comparison.

We finished our U.S. food feast with a Plate of Ten Ribs – a Hooters signature dish we were not disappointed with, in fact for HUF 2000 we were delighted with the taste and amazing value for money. What we got was a mouth-watering slab of tender pork ribs, dripping in a gorgeous sweet-and-tangy sauce, with the meat was falling off the bone. In our shared experience those ribs were cooked to perfection - as were the mountain of curly-shaped thick potato chips.

Our bill came to around HUF 20,000 including a shot and a few beers each, desert wasn’t an option. From the perspective of price and atmosphere, Hooters wins hands down compared to any other American style joint in Hungary. Clearly the hands-on American management, quietly observing standards and seemingly every plate leaving the kitchen, is paying-off a treat. Everyone we saw arriving was greeted with a warm smile that stayed sincere throughout the meal, and we all left feeling satisfied after an indulgence that didn’t leave us feeling guilty but genuinely happy with the experience.

We tipped HUF 3000 and our Hooters Girl cheerfully invited us to come back soon. We are planning a return visit to try the tasty looking Chicken Burger (HUF 1750, -) and some of the various salads, or that’s our excuse - even though we don’t really need one. Hooters Budapest is what it is, what it promises to be, fresh fun food and friendly service from fab-looking females, all good.
