Xpat Opinion: Great Classical Concert Series At CEU Budapest

Central European University's Center for Arts and Culture wound up an excellent autumn concert season last week. It featured an all-Beethoven chamber music program from artists-in-residence the Classicus Ensemble - András Németh and Zoltán Fejérvári on piano, Oszkár Varga violin and Tamás Zétényi cello. No dour intimidating sturm-und-drangfest this. Instead, we had both pianists in Beethoven's early sonata for four hands in D major, Op. 6, a sprightly work from 1797, when the young composer was still enjoying life in the sunset of ancien regime Vienna.

The following solo sonata in A major, Op. 101 from 1816, played by Németh, is more representative of his late period, marking the point of departure into more free-form impressionistic structures, but even then it is a lively, positive work, beautifully presented.
And title notwithstanding, the evening finished with a trio, the Op. 1. No. 2 piano trio in G major (this time with Fejérvári at the keys), dating right from the start of his career in 1795, one of his first opus numbered works.
The CAC's spring season in 2013 is bound to be just as entertaining, and well worth signing up for at http://cac.ceu.hu. The programs are varied (from free jazz to Turkish folk), the venue is CEU's glorious old premises near the Basilica, and entry and wine are free. Great.
