Hungary's Kúria Cancels Frequency Tender
The Kúria, Hungary’s supreme court, yesterday upheld the Capital Court’s annulment of last year’s frequency tender for a fourth mobile operator in Hungary. As a result state mobile operator MPVI Mobil cannot launch a service, which was originally planned for December 2012.

Furthermore, the three incumbent mobile companies must cease using their frequency bands obtained at the tender. They will be repaid the Ft 30 billion concession fee.

The government will probably sell these additional frequency bands again this year as Ft 40 billion from such a sale is included in the 2013 budget, Napi Gazdaság points out.

MPVI announced that the state will examine the opportunities still open.

Vodafone warned that the Kúria decision could deprive 1.2 million mobile users of broadband services in areas that cannot be served with broadband in frequencies other than those won at the tender.

Vodafone expressed hope that it can make a deal with the government on continuing to use the frequency bands it obtained last year.
