Hundreds Protest At Fidesz HQ In Budapest
Hundreds of people protested in favour of the rule of law outside Fidesz headquarters on Saturday afternoon to mark the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the party. Party activists hung a banner on the building, wishing protesters a happy Easter, while police turned out in large numbers.

Organisers said the aim of the protest was to point out that Fidesz was founded as an anti-authoritarian party, but has since become a party that strives to concentrate power in its own hands.

One banner read: “You have become what you fought against in 1989”.

Several speakers accused the government of building a dictatorship and dismantling the rule of law.

Ferenc Kõszeg, of the Helsinki Committee, compared the government to the Kádár regime, declaring that protesters today are intimidated in the same way.

LMP MP András Schiffer was among the crowd outside the building on Lendvay utca in the Sixth District.

The demonstrators ended their protest by singing the national anthem.

They then walked to the police jail on Buda’s Gyorskocsi utca, where two anti-Fidesz activists arrested on Friday were held.

At the request of the organisers the crowd peacefully dissolved at 8 p.m.
