U.S. Embassy Representatives Attend Mihaly Kovats Memorial Ceremony In Hungary
Defense Attache Mark Karas and Cultural Affairs Officer Dmitri Tarakhovsky attended a ceremony honoring Mihaly Kovats on May 10, 2013 in Karcag. Colonel Kovats, a native of Karcag, recruited, trained and led the first U.S. cavalry unit into battle and died on May 11, 1779, in a cavalry charge against British troops outside of Charleston, South Carolina.

Colonel Karas said in his remarks that the United States and Hungary fight for the same values as Mihaly Kovats did over 200 years ago. Colonel Karas spoke highly of Hungary’s Special Operations Forces serving in Afghanistan and thanked them for their sacrifices, hard work and courage.

Rural development minister Sandor Fazekas and defense minister Csaba Hende also spoke at the ceremony. As the conclusion of the event, Cultural Affairs Officer Tarakhovsky opened an exhibit on the history of diplomatic relations between Hungary and the U.S. in a local elementary school named after Mihaly Kovats. Mr. Tarakhovsky focused on people to people diplomacy and emphasized the importance of civil society.
