Danube Peaks In Budapest
The level of the Danube peaked in Budapest at 891cm at 4 a.m. Monday, exceeding the previous record of 860cm reached in 2006. There was no catastrophe at the city’s two most vulnerable sites of Batthyány tér and Margaret Island, nor anywhere else in the city, mayor István Tarlós declared at a joint press conference with the prime minister.

However, work was still ongoing at the Aranyhegyi stream in the Third District, where the dikes leaked.

Water leaked into the metro station at Batthyány tér, which had been closed, on Saturday. The water has since been pumped back into the river, but the metro station has not been reopened.

Batthyány tér remains closed to buses and all vehicular traffic. Fõ utca is closed between the Chain Bridge and Margaret Bridge.

Such changes will remain in effect for at least a week, Tarlós said.

Experts say the flood will have subsided when the water level drops below 800cm, most probably on Wednesday.
