EU Court Rules Against Hungary's 98% Tax On Severance Pay
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg awarded €16,000 in compensation and €900 in legal expenses to a former tax office employee who sued the government over its 98% tax on severance pay introduced in 2010.

Mária Eszter Gáll of Szolnok had worked for the tax authority for over 30 years before she was dismissed in March 2011.

The court ruled that the government had violated a European convention of the protection of and right to property.

The Court reached a similar ruling over the 98% tax last month. Népszava writes that it will rule against the tax in another case next Tuesday.
