Refugee Centre Meets Local Resistance In Hungary
A new refugee centre will open near Vámosszabadi in Gyõr county in August, despite intense local opposition, Immigration and Citizenship Office head Zsuzsanna Végh confirmed yesterday. She told a heated town meeting that renovation of the property will be complete in two or three weeks, and that the first refugees are expected to arrive in August.

The hundreds of local residents present interrupted her speech with whistles, boos, shouts and chants.

Végh said the about 200 people who will be accommodated at the centre on the outskirts of the town will pose no risk to public health nor public safety. Most refugees are fleeing war zones with their children, she said, adding “criminals cannot reach you”.
