Invitation: 'Blessing Of The Bread' Celebration, Budapest. 20 August
The blessing of the bread is a traditionally integral part of the celebrations of 20 August. Traditionally, the first bread made of the newly harvested wheat was prepared for the day of St Stephen. The bread adorned with a ribbon in the national colours is the symbol of the national holiday.

Bread symbolises life, livelihood and home. With the bread adorned with a ribbon in the national colours, we express that life and home are interlinked. The ceremonial tables were decorated with loafs of bread made from the new flour, which became a symbol of the day commemorating the foundation of the Hungarian state.

Bread has been held in great regard for centuries. In the countryside, the tradition of drawing a cross on the bread before cutting it still remains. Bread is blessed in churches all around the country on 20 August.

On Clark Ádám Square, at 2:30 pm on 20 August 2013, ceremonial speeches will be given by Mónika Balatoni, Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Relations of the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice, and Gábor Tamás Nagy, Mayor of the 1st district (Budavár). Imre Bence, dean of the Lutheran Church of Buda, will bless the bread. The blessing will be accompanied by folk singer-storyteller András Berecz, and the traditional dance groups of Bag and Zengővárkony.

The organizers reserve the right to change the programme.
