Hungary's PM Orban Warns Against Complacency As He Sacks Constituency Heads
Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned Fidesz MPS that they cannot relax ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections, as he addressed a caucus meeting which got under way in Visegrad. Orban removed five constituency leaders, saying he was dissatisfied with their work.

No matter how good the opinion poll results are, no one can sit back, he said. An MP told HVG that Orban referred to 2002 when Fidesz narrowly lost the elections when it had been in power.

A lot of work lies ahead in individual constituencies, Orban told the gathering, as that is where the 2014 elections will have to be won.

As a warning, he mentioned Fidesz’s defeat by a joint left-wing candidate in a local by-election in Szigetszentmiklos on Sunday, saying not enough energy was expended there.

He said utility rate cuts will be the party’s most important campaign weapon.

In addition, Orban said the Socialists will lose in 2014 because they are unable to make the most of their opportunities.

Seeking to calm those who will lose out with the reduction of MPs seats, he said “everyone will have a place in offices, or in state companies,” another MP told HVG.

Orban stressed that there will be “no mercy” for those who do not work.

Orban began his speech at 8 p.m., spoke for 45 minutes and then answered questions until 11 p.m.

HVG says Fidesz is preparing to make several major announcements, primarily on tax breaks for low-income families.
