Lufthansa To Move Its Budapest Headquarters
Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Central and Eastern European headquarters will move from Budapest to Vienna from January 2014, said Lufthansa regional director Ofer Kisch. Although, regional leaders of the German airline tried to soften the significance of the transfer, it is a serious loss of prestige for Hungary.

The company expects this step to improve the coordination of regional sales activities between Lufthansa and its recently purchased partner Austrian Airlines (AUA). “There are certain countries where AUA represents Lufthansa, and there are those where it works the other way around,” Kisch added.

The director also explained that despite some assumptions, the move has nothing to do with Hungary’s current political and economical situation, and he will remain a regular visitor to Budapest.

The decision seriously harms Hungary’s reputation, however, as Lufthansa has been present in the country since 1967, and has maintained its Central and Eastern European headquarters in Budapest since 1997.
