The emblematic orchestral works of the late Romantic period, Richard Strauss’s symphonic poems, and the symphonies of Bruckner and Mahler all enjoy a special place in the repertoire of the Hungarian National Philharmonic. Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 is also known as the Song of the Night because of its two distinctive Nachtmusik movements.

The Austrian composer wrote the work in the last two years of a “happy period of peace” in his life, completing it in 1906. Its première took place two years later in Prague, at the festival marking the Diamond Jubilee of Franz Joseph as King of Bohemia.

This evening’s conductor, Hungarian-born Stefan Soltesz, has enjoyed a glittering career abroad, serving as artistic director of the Essen Opera House and music director of the Essen Philharmonic.
