Ukrainians’ Eligibility For Hungary Pension No Good Practice, Say Socialists
The government should have cancelled long ago an interstate accord from the Soviet era allowing Ukrainian citizens to apply for a Hungarian pension, the main opposition Socialists said. Party board member Lajos Korózs told a press conference that the Bajnai government had been planning to cancel the 1962 pact signed between Hungary and the Soviet Union but the change of government in 2010 prevented this.

The Orbán government has not made a decision on the issue despite a large number of pension applications submitted from Ukraine resulting in billions of forints of costs to the Hungarian social security system, he added. Ukrainian citizens can apply for a Hungarian pension if they renounce their pension in Ukraine and have a Hungarian address; they do not need to hold Hungarian citizenship.

He said masses of people make use of this opportunity, including not only ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia, but also Crimean Tatars and Russians living in the Donetsk Basin.

Acquiring Hungarian citizenship has become a “business with a good return” in Ukraine, and companies are now specialised in researching for alleged predecessors, Korózs added.
