Top Court Rejects Complaint Over Margaret Island In Budapest
The Constitutional Court has rejected a constitutional complaint lodged by a Budapest district council concerning authority over Margaret Island, according to the ruling posted on the court’s website on Tuesday.

The complaint was filed last June by the council of the 13th district over the law on transferring the island’s administration from the local council to the Budapest municipal council. József Tóth, the district’s Socialist mayor, said at the time that parts of the law were unconstitutional and against the rule of law.

He insisted that the island’s public administration boundaries had been altered in a singular way and without preliminary consultation with the district council.

At a session on Monday, the court established that the constitution did not underpin the district’s claim to running the island. Further, the district’s submission had failed to address any constitutional issue, it added.

The district council responded that the court’s decision was further evidence the country’s constitution gravely limits local government autonomy.
