Rogán: RTL Klub “Clubbing” Government In Hungary
Commercial television channel RTL Klub is using its news programmes as a “political cudgel” to take revenge on the government for the introduction of the ad tax, ruling Fidesz group leader Antal Rogán said in an interview to MTI on Tuesday.

“Nobody had the courage” to levy a tax on the advertising market before, Rogán said, adding the sector should now bear its share of the public burden.

Luxembourg-based RTL has made the largest profits on adverts, and it is trying to intimidate public figures by attacking them or their family members, Rogán said, referring to a report on the business interests of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s father.

The tax is expected to raise 10 billion forints for the budget.

On Monday’s decision by the Kúria, Rogán said he saw no possibility for the 500,000 forex mortgage borrowers to settle their dispute with banks through individual lawsuits.

Just as the banks made unilateral changes to loan contracts without consulting their clients individually, “we need to make general rules, and this requires legislation”.

On the subject of the upcoming municipal elections, Rogán said that most of the candidates would be Fidesz’s “tried and tested” mayors, such as Budapest’s mayor, István Tarlós, whom he praised for resolving the problems of the capital’s public transport company, settling irregularities in projects started earlier for which the European Union fined Budapest, and for completing the city’s fourth metro line.
