Hungary’s PM Office Chief Denies Report Of Tax On Road Companies
Prime Minister’s Office chief János Lázár told TV2’s evening news on Thursday that the cabinet does not plan to levy a 15% tax on road construction companies, contrary to Thursday reports.

He confirmed that the European Commission has ordered an inquiry into Hungarian road works projects financed by Ft 500 billion in EU funds. If it finds irregularities, it could impose a fine of up to Ft 100 billion, Lázár said.

“The government’s primary goal is to protect Hungarian taxpayers and Hungarian companies,” he affirmed, adding “we do not plan to extend this protection to foreign companies”.

Lázár remarked that sanctions will in all certainty be imposed. but the question is what form they will take.
