Leftist Opposition Parties Clash Over “Provocation” At Budapest Demo
The opposition E-PM party alliance said it had not been involved in an incident that took place at an event organised by leftist opposition Democratic Coalition at the weekend (DK). DK said it awaited a reply from E-PM about whether it had deliberately mounted a “provocation” at the event, at which the head of the Krétakör foundation, Márton Gulyás, held up a banner with the slogan: “Instead of the Gypsy card, left-wing solutions”.

People in the crowd near Gulyás seized the banner and they pushed and lashed out against him. He was eventually escorted away from the event by security guards.

DK leader Ferenc Gyurcsány condemned the incident, saying he would ask for an investigation.

The party expressed regret over the incident, adding however that witnesses had allegedly seen Gulyás consulting with a programme organiser of the E-PM alliance both before and during the event, which gave the impression they had been involved in the “provocation”.

E-PM said it had not known about Gulyás’s actions but agreed with his statements and found the incident regrettable. Gyurcsány said at the event that democratic, freedom-loving Europeans must not give up their beliefs. At DK’s “Day of Resistance” event,

Gyurcsány said he wanted a free country where it is possible to think and speak freely. He called on the people gathered by the Batthyány flame near parliament to love their country passionately, and urged leftist opposition parties to look for what they have in common to build a strong opposition over the next few years.
