Fidesz Party's Vice-President Criticises Displays Of Wealth
Fidesz politicians should not go on expensive trips or buy houses worth millions of forints in the wake of the American corruption accusations, party vice-president Zoltán Pokorni said on Saturday.

Interviewed by HírTV, Pokorni said he expects self-restraint and reserve from his fellow MPs. “These are affairs of varying importance, as to who wears what watch, who is going on holiday, or who has how big a house” he said.

Many such cases were known about in recent years, but nobody showed an interest, he remarked, as they were not associated with the accusation of corruption.

Pokorni observed that the US has knocked a chink in Fidesz’s armour – only a small hole but the water is gushing in, and the flow must be stopped. “No responsible cabinet member can afford such a gentrified lifestyle, which earlier may have been accepted”, he warned.

Some Fidesz politicians attribute the recent fall in the party’s popularity to the fact that society is irked by the spectacular growth in wealth of some ministers, state secretaries and Fidesz politicians, Népszabadság writes.

Pokorni mentioned no names, but the newspaper says it is clear that he meant Lajos Kósa – who by his own admission spent two-thirds of his monthly income to see a Rolling Stones concert in New Zealand last week – and PMO Minister János Lázár in connection with hunting and Rolex watches.

News recently emerged that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó owns a Ft 167 million house, and that state secretary András Giró-Szász’s net worth is over Ft 800 million.
