Budaörs Won’t Pay To Light Motorways
Budaörs will no longer pay for public lighting of the opening joint section of the M1 and M7 motorways leading southwest from Budapest, mayor Tamás Wittinghof announced yesterday.

Wittinghof, an independent, said the introduction of a toll for the affected roadways unilaterally changed transport conditions, therefore Budaörs is cancelling a 2002 lighting contract, effective February 28, and has informed Budapest electricity company Elmû.

In response, government spokesman Zoltán Kovács told reporters that the mayor may not cancel such agreements unilaterally.

Care will be taken to make sure that there be public lighting along the relevant sections of motorway, he said, adding that lawyers will examine the issue.

Wittinghof told Inforádió that Budaörs plays a considerable role in the daily operation of the roadway and built the public lighting as its own investment project.

The Development Ministry has said it will amend the toll if necessary by January 31.
