Hungarian Court Rejects Áder Claim Against Index
The Capital Court on Friday rejected a libel claim filed by President János Áder in which he demanded Ft 1 million from Index. The news website had published a piece by writer and film director András B. Vágvölgyi who remembered that while in the army in Kalocsa in 1978 Áder and a few associates “had access somehow to alcohol”, and that later Áder’s weapon went off, “not pointed at anyone, but only firing in the air”.

Áder later said that Vágvölgyi’s memory was faulty and he also demanded Ft 1 million from Vágvölgyi.

The court ruled that Index does not have to pay compensation, as it also provided space for Áder’s views.

The judge said the events occurred such a long time ago that Vágvölgyi’s reminiscences, even if false, could not have caused any grievance to Áder.
