Németh: Tension With US Limits Hungary’s Scope For Action
Tense and unsettled relations with the United States substantially limit Hungary’s scope of action. For this reason, it lies in Hungary’s interest to settle this “marriage in crisis” and clarify misunderstandings, Zsolt Németh, head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, told national daily Népszabadság.

A founding member of ruling Fidesz, Németh admitted that some components of Hungarian-Russian relations were problematic for the United States.

Budapest should make it clear to Washington that its ties with Russia are basically of an economic nature. In political and security policy terms, however, the US and Hungary stand much closer to one another in assessing Moscow’s policies than they seem to be, he said.

The impending visit to Hungary by Victoria Nuland, US state department assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, can also clear up misunderstandings, Németh said.

Addressing EU-US ties, he said that the planned Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), apart from many difficulties, would reflect the two sides’ longterm interdependence.

“Europe should grasp the opportunity that US President Barack Obama wants to finalise key components of the agreement before his term expires.”

Németh underlined Hungary’s interest that Ukraine should develop within its internationally recognised borders and make decisions regarding its own future.
