President Áder Encourages Conservation On World Water Day
Addressing an event on World Water Day, President János Áder urged all Hungarians to do their part to preserving the country’s water resources for future generations. Speaking in Héviz, home to one of the largest thermal lakes in the world, Áder said it is a joint responsibility of all Hungarians to conserve the country’s water resources.

He noted that the lake in Hévíz could have been lost had it not been for the work of “a few brave people” who “put aside their political differences” 26 years ago.

The government of Hungary decided in 1989 to cease bauxite mining in nearby Nyírád because the activity was dewatering the surrounding area, notably the lake in Hévíz.

The lake in western Hungary draws more than one million visitors a year, many of whom benefit from its therapeutic qualities.
