Canadians On Fact-Finding Visit In Hungary
Canadian immigration authorities are visiting Miskolc to find out the reasons for Roma emigration and why so many of them decide to seek refuge in Canada. The Roma primarily left from the “numbered streets” district of the city, which local authorities plan to demolish to make room for a car park as part of the expansion of the town’s sports stadium.

Mihály Dancs, head of the Roma Civil Rights Movement, told Népszabadság that the local council initially wanted to pay Roma families to leave the city, then chose the tactic of not extending the rent contracts for properties and of considerably raising rents.

Dancs said local Roma families have also tried to settle in Switzerland and the UK, but failed in Switzerland and did not find work in England.

Canada’s immigration laws are less strict, the government provides support and many Roma have relatives there, generally in Toronto, he added.
