Budapest Among World’s Top Conference Locations
Hungary has progressed to 31th position, while Budapest has held onto its 17th place on the latest world rankings issued by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), which lists the number of international events complying with the organisation’s criteria, the Hungarian Tourism Agency told the state news agency MTI on Thursday.

Hungary has improved one position compared to its result for the year 2013 and the capital remains in 17th position among the world’s cities, overtaking major locations such as Stockholm (19th), Tokyo (22nd), Dublin (24th), Munich (26th), Zurich (33rd) and Warsaw (39th). ICCA’s world rankings show that Paris was the most popular location for conferences and conventions in 2014, followed by Vienna and Madrid.

Hungary’s popularity as a location of conferences could improve further after the opening of Budapest’s new convention centre, scheduled for 2018. The capital could become one of the world’s ten most popular locations for conferences within 2-3 years of it opening, the statement issued by the Hungarian Tourism Agency reads. The goal is for Budapest to become one of Europe’s most popular convention locations by 2020.

Under ICAA’s criteria, international conferences are regular venues held alternately between at least three countries with at least 50 attendants.
