Consumers’ Rights Protection “Effective”, Says Hungarian Media Authority
Hungary’s media authority on Thursday said it was "effective" in protecting infocommunications consumers’ rights and rejected recent critical remarks by a Socialist lawmaker. Ferenc Baja said the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) should do more to protect consumers’ rights in the infocommunications sector.

The authority said in a statement that it was because of its intervention that consumers could opt out of the tariff changes by Magyar Telekom and Telenor which took effect on July 1.

The authority noted it had previously obliged the two telecommunications companies to inform subscribers about their tariff changes and guarantee them 15 days to notify their service providers whether they wish to opt out of the changes.

The NMHH announced a probe of the two telcos in June to determine whether tariff increases they planned were in compliance with regulations.

The authority prohibited the companies from implementing the tariff rises until the investigation was concluded.
