Hungarian Election CTTEE Approves Referendum Drive To Keep Shops Closed On Sundays
The National Election Committee (NVB) sanctioned a referendum question on Sunday shopping restrictions and a signature drive can now be started in the interest of holding a referendum on the question. The question approved by the NVB was submitted by Gabriella Simon Gercsényi as a private individual on October 20, and then again on October 30 with some required changes.

The question now approved is the following: “Do you agree that retail shops should be allowed to stay closed on Sundays?”

Earlier the Kúria, Hungary’s supreme court, upheld a decision by the NVB to reject referendum questions on the same subject.

The opposition Socialist Party submitted referendum questions several times to the NVB, in an effort to lift the restrictions on Sunday shopping. Their questions were rejected on procedural grounds.
