New Hungarian Fidesz Deputy Chairman Aims To Mobilise Youth
Newly-elected Fidesz deputy chairman Gábor Kubatov said one of his main goals in his new post would be to politically mobilise young people. Kubatov told MTI after Sunday’s Fidesz congress that it is important to develop a new strategy to invigorate the next generation’s engagement in politics and to strengthen young people’s sense of community and national belonging.

On the subject of migration, Kubatov said the fact that over 1.5 million people have signed the ruling party’s petition against the European Union’s migrant quota scheme demonstrates that the majority is firmly behind Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s policies on migration.

He said Orbán is the only European leader today who is protecting his country and adhering to EU law, adding that Orbán has become one of the best-known and most popular politicians in Europe. Kubatov said nobody signing the petition against the quota system was obliged to provide personal details.

Referring to past allegations of having illegally stored a list of potential Fidesz voters, Kubatov said: “There was never any Kubatov list, nor will there be one this time.” He said the data protection authority is constantly monitoring the signature drive and has yet to find any errors or irregularities in the process.

Kubatov said he is now the number two man in ruling Fidesz “only on paper” as there are “many wiser and more experienced” people in the party who have stuck together over the past 25 years “through thick and thin”. He said the most important values in his party were honesty, loyalty and hard work, adding that any of his peers has as much say in the party’s affairs as he does.

The deputy chairman said the key to his party’s success is values-based politics. “We can see that European politicians, out of fear of losing power, are trying to force crazy, out-of-touch ideas wrapped in the deceit of political correctness onto the European people,” Kubatov said, insisting that Fidesz has chosen a different path.
