Hungarian Swimmer Hosszú Tears Up Contract At Press Conference
Five-time world swimming champion Katinka Hosszú yesterday rejected – by ripping it up in front of reporters – an offer of Ft 12 million in support from the Hungarian Swimming Federation. The world and European champion objected to the requirement that she must promote the 2017 world championships in Budapest in return for the funding and said the money would be better spent on upgrading the technical background to ensure continuous progress for Hungarian swimmers.

“I still feel that with my results I have earned the support and it should not be tied to any further demands. This is why I will not sign the contract,” Hosszú said as she tore it into pieces.

Hosszú declared that she would train alone with her American coach and husband Shane Tusup for this summer’s Olympic games, but will represent Hungary.

President Tamás Gyárfás said the federation continues to do all it can to help Hosszú, and accepted some responsibility for the way their relations have deteriorated.

Gyárfás told ATV Wednesday evening that Hosszú unselfishly took part in campaigns in 2013 but their relationship has soured since then.

He said he had asked her in the summer to take part in a campaign film leading up to the world championship which also includes Tamás Kásás and Dániel Gyurta.

“Two days before shooting the film, she called me up from America and said there is a price and named a sum, and I said ‘thanks, but no thanks’,” Gyárfás recalled.

He said Hosszú receives everything that she asks for.

“We have checked how much we spend on her, and it is four times more than what we spend on László Cseh, and he is also a world champion.”
