Hungary’s President: Let Love Be Our Compass In 2016
President János Áder focused on the importance of “love, empathy, assistance, goodwill, and humility” in his televised address broadcast in the first minutes of 2016. “Let love be our compass,” the president said, and wished peace to Europe and the world, success to Hungary, and a “very happy New Year” to its people.

In his address, Áder advised that New Year’s wishes should be complete with “compassion for people in trouble, readiness to help the poor or the disabled, assistance to people who cannot find their way in the world and a humble attitude towards our natural environment”.

He said it has been long since the world felt as uncertain about the new year ahead as it does now about 2016. Referring to the terror attacks of 2015, Áder said that “there is no greater treasure than the safety of our country and our loved ones”.

To illustrate the uncertainty that lies ahead, Áder said no one could predict at the beginning of last year that Europe would be gripped by a prolonged migrant crisis for most of the year, presenting the continent with challenges the likes of which it had not seen for decades, or that Paris would become the site of brutal terror attacks and a historic climate agreement within the span of one month.
