With No Agreement, Taxi Demo Continues In Budapest
As the delegation of taxi drivers protesting against U.S.-based ride-sharing service Uber’s Hungarian operations could not reach an agreement with Budapest Mayor István Tarlós at a meeting today, the demonstration began this morning continues, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

Although no agreement was reached, Tarlós ensured the taxi drivers that they have the municipality’s support. Tarlós said in a statement issued today that “tax-paying Hungarian taxi drivers who follow the rules”could continue to count on the capitalʼs support in the Uber matter. “Uber drivers do not comply with the capitalʼs tax decree,” the statement cited Tarlós, according to MTI.

“The goal of the capital, with the cooperation of the central government, is the validation of legality, that is, everybodyʼs compliance with the taxi decree,” he said, while conceding that the city has neither the “official instruments” nor the “physical recourse” of prohibiting or shutting down Uber.

Since early this morning, approximately 100 taxi drivers have been demonstrating against the Hungarian operations of Uber, leaving only two lanes free on Budapest’s Andrássy út.
