Teachers’ Trade Union Insists Protests Serve Children’s Interest
The PDSZ teachers’ trade union said “it’s a big problem” if the government office chief fails to understand the reasons for teachers’ disaffection or the fact that they are protesting in the interests of “children, public education and the country’s future”.

PDSZ leader László Mendrey reacted to government office chief János Lázár’s Thursday press briefing in which he accused the trade union of “blackmailing” the government.

Mendrey said if Lázár does not understand that school operator Klik, which has accumulated debts of 17 billion forints (EUR 54m), is “not an indicator of a mistake but the mistake itself, then he is not a responsibly thinking politician”.

Mendrey added that freeing up the textbook market would serve the interest of schools rather than the so-called “textbook lobby” that Lázár insisted was behind calls to abolish central control over textbooks.
