Prosecutor Presses Charges Against Former Socialist Official
The Central Investigating Chief Prosecutor’s Office said it pressed charges of excessive fraud and document abuse against Gábor Simon, a former deputy leader of the opposition Socialist Party. Simon’s case goes back to February 2014 when it came to light during the run-up to the general election that Simon had undeclared assets worth about 240 million forints (EUR 780,000) held on an Austrian bank account.

It later turned out that he also had a secret Swiss bank account. In the same month, Simon quit his post as deputy party leader and gave up his party mandate in parliament.

A court in Budapest ordered freezing Simon’s account in September in that year and the politician was first put into pre-trial detention and later into house arrest.

The Chief Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday that their investigation concluded that Simon accumulated income worth 267 million forints of unclarified origin on which he failed to declare 120 million forints in taxes, the head of the office said.

The office also brought charges against Simon of abuse of asset declaration documents on eight accounts and acting as abettor in document forgery, Imre Keresztes told a press conference.

The office also pressed charges against a second suspect, an accomplice accused of forging passports and using these documents, Keresztes said, adding that the person is not a politician.

He said the Chief Prosecutor’s Office initiated a prison sentence for Simon to be served. In response to questions, Keresztes said there was no evidence to suggest that the money was to be used for party purposes or that other politicians were also involved in the case.
