Szeged Market Traders Protest
Traders at Szeged’s Cserepes market staged the latest in a series of demonstrations in front of the city hall on Monday against plans by the city to raise their rents. The city-owned company that runs the market has increased the rent significantly beyond what poorer traders can afford, the protesters argue.

Many say the real aim of the rent hike is to close the market and utilise the space as a construction site.

The closing of the market would eliminate 100 jobs, the traders argue.

Demonstrators also demanded the resignation of market CEO Attila Rácz, because he wanted to illegally charge VAT on rents and accused traders of bribery.

They asked the city’s Socialist mayor László Botka to visit the market this week and address the problem.

Traders have collected 7,000 signatures in support of the market.
