Tax Backlogs And Debtors Decline
Hungarian households and businesses owed a combined Ft 2.247 trillion to the tax office at the end of the first quarter, a drop of about 12% from Ft 2.569 trillion one year earlier, according to data from the tax office NAV.

The number of individuals and companies with unpaid taxes fell from 1.7 million to 1.6 million. At the end of March, 1.2 million individuals had a combined tax backlog of Ft 202 billion, while companies still in operation owed Ft 241.5 billion.

Defunct businesses owed Ft 1.803 trillion in total.

Changes in tax collection from the beginning of the year explain the Ft 322 billion decline in unpaid taxes, said NAV spokesman Attila Suller.

Onsite checks have increased and in some cases – such as companies owing less than Ft 500,000 – the tax office has become more lenient, refraining from seizing assets.
