Government Spokesperson: The Decision Of The British People Must Be Respected
“Whatever the people of Britain decide at the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union, that decision must be respected”, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács said on Hungarian M1 television’s Thursday evening current affairs program.

According to Mr. Kovács, whatever the outcome of the British vote, beyond the immediate political and economic repercussions we must expect a long process that could last for up to two years.

The Government Spokesperson also noted that at the summit of European Union heads of state and government that ended on 19 February an agreement was reached on the EU reforms demanded by the UK, including stricter social services regulations for workers from other EU Member States, and concerning the fact that the United Kingdom must take part in the process of further tightening EU integration.

If the “Remain” side wins then the above points must still be fulfilled, but if Britain votes to leave the EU it will bring with it a host of previously unknown procedures that include “many, many open questions”, Mr. Kovács added.

During the program, it was also mentioned that the French authorities have stated that the terrorist threat to the UEFA Euro 2016 European Championships has increased, with relation to which Mr. Kovács said: “The authorities had already warned of the situation prior to the tournament and the latest information concerns an increase of the terrorist threat”.

“We ask that everyone register themselves and keep a close eye on the various forums provided by the Counter-Terrorism Centre (…) and by the local authorities, and that people also keep an eye on each other”, he said. Caution is the best option, he added.
